Frequently asked questions

Do you only play D&D?

No! Our first three Adventures are D&D-based, both because we love D&D and because that’s what we anticipate most people will want to play on holiday. But we can run anything you’d like on a custom Adventure, and we’ve got plenty of ideas for future non-D&D Adventures. Join our Discord and let us know what games you’d like to play!

Do you pay your game masters?

Yes of course! It’s a little sad that this question needs answering. Our game masters are all professionals; experts at running fun, inclusive and safe games for varied groups of people.

Can I request a specific game master?

Only if you’re booking a custom Adventure. Even then, our game masters are busy people, so schedules may prove an obstacle. On a ticketed Adventure, you and the other parties present will usually switch tables between multiple GMs, who each preside over a different part of the same world. Our GMs all have their own style, but they all hold the same values of collaboration, inclusivity and fun.

I’m having such fun with my GM! Do I really have to switch tables?

If you’re on a ticketed Adventure, then yes, sorry! Giving our GMs control over part of the world, rather than staying with you for the whole Adventure, gives them the autonomy they need to express themselves creatively. And we’re sure you’ll like your next GM just as much! We have a huddle between sessions to pass on details about plot, parties and character development, to maintain continuity for adventurers.

What happens if someone is behaving unsafely on an Adventure?

Our Code of Conduct sets out what we discourage and prohibit on our Adventures. Depending on the nature of the behaviour we’ll take one or more of these actions:

  • An informal conversation to make the adventurer aware of their behaviour and its consequences;

  • A warning to cease the relevant behaviour;

  • Inform the adventurer that they are no longer allowed to participate in the RPG element of the holiday;

  • Ask the adventurer to leave the accommodation and return home.

Our Booking Conditions make clear that, in the case of limited participation or removal from the Adventure, the adventurer in question is not entitled to a refund.Why can’t I pay for my deposit now, rather than reserving my spot for £0 first?

Under the Package Travel Regulations 2018, all customer money for package holidays must be financially protected at every point of sale. As a small business, we do this through a ‘trust account’, which operates similarly to a deposit protection scheme.

This means we can’t take payments for holidays through our webstore, because the money can’t touch our bank account. Instead, shortly after you make your £0 purchase, we send you a link to pay your money directly into the trust account we share with the Travel Trust Association (TTA). This means you could get your money back in the unlikely event that we went bankrupt. We are looking into some clever means of directing the online store straight to the trust account, but there are some knotty issues to untangle.

What’s the TTA?

The Travel Trade Association is a network of small travel businesses and entrepreneurs. The TTA manage the ‘trust account’ that your money goes into, and if we went bust, they would help you get your money back. Every adventurer is issued with more information about how the TTA protects their money when they book.

What’s your policy on trans people, room sharing and bathrooms?

Trans women are women and trans men are men. We ask people what their gender identity and their room sharing preferences when they book, but we don’t ask, and have no way of knowing, whether someone is trans or cis. And it wouldn’t matter if we did.

More importantly, our Code of Conduct prohibits transphobia. Any adventurers harassing, bullying or otherwise creating an unsafe environment will be warned, have their participation limited, and/or be ask to leave the Adventure without a refund (see our Booking Conditions).

Can I bring my kids?

Not just yet on our ticketed Adventures, although we hoping to offer family- and child-centred Adventures in the future. But we can accommodate children on a custom Adventure if they are accompanied by adults. They can play in the same party as the adults or we can run a separate kids game.

Can I bring my pet?

Yes, but again, only on a custom Adventure. Allergies, phobias and preferences make pets on our regular Adventures, where you are attending with people you don’t know, not a good idea. But if you’re attending with your own group, and the accommodation allows a pet, then we have no problem with it.

Can I bring someone who isn’t playing?

Only on certain Adventures. Some have a non-playing rate - where a person is charged for their accommodation, food and activities but receives a discount for not playing at an RPG table. Where accommodation capacity is lower, we remove these rates, as every non-player takes a bed away from a potential player. Of course non-players can always come on custom Adventures.

I live nearby. Can I come without paying for accommodation?

Maybe. Get in touch with us directly. This will depend on the capacity on each playing table and several other variables. We can also arrange non-residential custom events.

Can I GM for Moonshine?

We’re not currently running GM recruitment, but we’d love to recruit more and more GMs as we grow, particularly those from marginalised groups. Keep an eye on our socials and you’ll see if we open up recruitment.
